Folajimi Oyekunle, popularly known as “Fola Oyekunle” or “DoN,” is a Nigerian politician, businessman, and philanthropist from Ibadan. He is widely known for representing the Ibadan North Federal Constituency and for his grassroots political influence in Oyo State politics.

Background and Early Life

Fola Oyekunle was born in Osunkaye, Bodija area of Ibadan, Oyo State. He reportedly spent part of his early life in Monatan while maintaining strong family roots in Yemetu, Ibadan.

Political Career

Oyo State House of Assembly

Fola Oyekunle first became politically prominent after emerging as a member of the Oyo State House of Assembly in 2019, representing Ibadan North Constituency I under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).  

During his tenure, he reportedly served as:

  • Chairman, House Committee on Youth and Sports
  • Chairman, House Committee on Public Hearing and Petitions
  • Member of several other legislative committees  

Appointment Under Governor Makinde

In December 2023, Seyi Makinde appointed him Deputy Chief of Staff in Oyo State Government.  

He later resigned from that role to contest the Ibadan North Federal Constituency bye-election.

Ibadan North Federal Constituency Bye-Election

Fola Oyekunle became nationally recognized after contesting the Ibadan North Federal Constituency bye-election under the PDP. The election was conducted following the death of the former lawmaker, Musiliu Olaide Akinremi, popularly called Jagaban.  

According to official results announced by INEC:

  • Oyekunle polled 18,404 votes
  • APC candidate Adewale Olatunji scored 8,312 votes  

The victory was considered significant because it returned the seat to the PDP after years of APC dominance in the constituency.
